Those who aren’t interested in spending the whole day on the beach have a great choice of cultural and historical activities to choose from in Estepona. If you’re interested in historical buildings of religious and historical significance, location vacances espagne then you’re in the right place. The area, like many other towns and cities in the region, has a long history and the buildings show the influences of the many peoples who lived and settled in the area throughout the history of the town – this includes of course the Romans and the Moors who left their mark in all of southern Spain.

Church of the Remedy

Head firstly to the Church of Los Remedios. Founded on a spot where locals claim a cross that Christians were using to worship amongst the trees during the Muslim occupation of Spain was found. They built a small structure on the spot and nearby a hospital, which later became a nunnery and monastery for the Franciscans. Later, on the same site, the Church of Los Remefios was constructed in the late 17th century, and it can be viewed to this day.

The Tower of Reloj

Next, you can go to the fascinating tower of Reloj. The ruins on this site belonged to a place of worship built during the time of Inrique the fourth in the 13th century. The church is the site of many local music festivals which you can attend during the summer months.

Bull fighting ring

Another interesting site is the bull fighting ring – known place of the Bulls. It is still used for bull fighting to this day, as well as other events such as shows, productions and music festivals. Monuments and museums in Marbella

Overview

For those who are more interested in local history and culture than the beaches and bars, there is still plenty to see in Marbella. The town’s rich history ensures that there is a wide range of monuments and buildings to visit, all with their own interesting stories to tell. So take a break from the beach and check out some of the interesting sites in the area, locations espagne which are worthwhile viewing and will help you see a little of the local history and culture whilst you stay in the area.

Things to see

Head first to the castle (or what’s left of it) on the old town. After the reconquista when the Christian population took control of the town, much of the Moorish architecture was destroyed, however part of the castle has survived. The walls that stand to this day are an important testament to that time and the engineering used by the Moors to protect the city. Only a small part remains today of what was previously an extensive protective network surrounding the town.

Before the Arab conquest of Spain it was the Romans, amongst others, who left their mark. A true gem is the small town known as Rio Verde, which belonged to the Romans and only discovered 50 years ago. A small part has been excavated – the rooms of which you can view today, providing an interesting insight into the time.

Others will love a trip to the older section in Marbella which shows fantastic architecture which has not changed much since the 1500s. It is a charming area with many interesting and traditional buildings of note, and is will liked by many who come to enjoy its unique atmosphere and shop in the boutiques in the area.

Near this older part of town is a very interesting church, known as the Incarnation. Off the picturesque Orange Place, you’ll find this church to be charming, dating back to the 15th century. Likewise, if you’re interested in art then you’ll love the Engraving museum. It shows a great range of local modern art as well as more famous pieces of work from internationally acclaimed artists.

Finally, the nearby town of San Pedro is a good place to see very old structures which date to 500AD, including some remains of an old church or two. Artefacts recovered from this site can be viewed in the local museum back in Marbella.

Festivals and Traditions

It is traditional for every Spanish town and city to have their own festivities aside from those national events like Christmas, All Saints Day, Easter Week, etc, but these festivities are rooted from the Catholicism that they practice. Cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari

The cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari is the main church and one of the most important landmarks of the city of Alicante and it is one of the many things that have been left in Alicante since the Moorish times. As many other churches in Spain, it was built upon the ruins of an old mosque. It is built in a style of renaissance with some elements of baroque, which are often seen as one of the best patterns of Spanish style of baroque and

location costa blanca

. Though there are many Catholic cathedrals in Spain, each one of them is unique and has its own history. Alicante as well as other places and their famous landmarks have gone through different periods of time and experienced a lot, so each of them has its own story. If you love history and culture, places like the cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari with its ancient old towns are the best places for you to visit.

The cathedral looks the way we can see it today only since the second half of 17th century. It is more than 45 meters high with its beautiful blue dome. In contrast with other churches nearby, the cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari hasn’t been reconstructed in different periods of time, so it has preserved its style more or less homogeneous, so it is a great pattern of Spanish baroque of the 17th century. Only the main front of it has remained since the 15th century, when there was the previous temple.

The cathedral looks very simple from the outside, but at the same time very impressive. Interior is on the contrary very abundantly decorated. What this cathedral also stands out with is the wonderful chapel, which is often assumed to be one of the most beautiful chapels in the whole country. The cloister of the cathedral that has an amazing pattern of adorned wooden doors in the style of baroque, is also something you should pay attention once you visit this place.

You can find the cathedral at the square of Abad Penalva, which is near the centre of the old city and the beach. If you are visiting the cathedral, it is very easy to combine it with a visit of other interesting places nearby. The cathedral of Saint Nicholas de Bari is closely located to the castle of Santa Barbara, the Archaeological museum and the St. Maria’s church.

Holidays In Cartagena

Visiting Spain

Spain is absolutely outstanding; it is that type of country that attracts millions and millions of visitors every year without any efforts, as its spectacular beauty is the best advantage a country can have. Visiting Spain is described by the ones who have already done it as a lifetime and life changing experience, as something that will offer you wonderful locations costa brava and the possibilities to try the fragrances and the perfumes of a very special nation! You have to try a holiday in Spain! I assure you that you will never regret your choice.

The beautiful Cartagena

Cartagena is one of the most popular destinations in Spain, Murcia’s second largest city and one of the most important and active ports in the country. The history of the city is a very old, interesting and rich one; founded by the Carthaginians no sooner than the 3rd century BC, as even the name indicates it, Cartagena was conquered by the Romans during the famous Punic War. The Romans helped the city reach its peak, transforming it into a very flourishing one because of two reasons: the nearby silver mine that started to be exploited and the Garum fish sauce that was much appreciated in the entire Roman Empire. Unfortunately, the Vandals destroyed Cartagena in the 5th century, but tourists can still visit some remarkable ruins, such as the Roman Theatre, dating back to the 1st century BC.

Places to visit

There are many more places to visit in Cartagena besides the Roman Theatre. A fine example is the Nuestra Senora Asuncion Cathedral, built in the 13th century; today, only its ruins survive, as the Cathedral was almost entirely destroyed during the Civil War. Castillo Conception is the beautiful fortress you’ll find right above the port, built in the 13th century in such a way as to incorporate the ruins of the outstanding Roman Amphitheatre. The Santo Domingo Church and the Iglesia Del Carmen, displaying original Neoclassical and Baroque architectural styles are also worth visiting.

The 19th century Iglesia de Caridad deserves your attention thanks to the spectacular Baroque paintings hosted behind its walls. Last but not least, visit the City Hall, the Aguirre Palace and the Casino, which are fine examples of modernist architecture. As you can see, Cartagena is a place full of history and with numerous monuments that deserve your attention, so consider it as destination for one of your future holidays!

All About the Canary Islands

A happy group of islands

The Canary Islands represent one of the most popular and famous tourist destinations in Spain, attracting millions of visitors every year. Their climate is a spectacular one; the landscapes seem like being taken from another world, while the inhabitants are welcoming and always in a good mood. These are definitely the ingredients for a perfect holiday in location villa piscine espagne, especially if you add to them the ample beaches covered with fine sands and the shallow waters of an unbelievable blue. Tourists describe the islands as being a paradisiacal group, so why not consider them as destination for a future holiday? It can be the memorable holiday you always dreamt of.

The islands and their attractions

The wonderful climate the islands enjoy, with mild temperatures all year long and hundreds of days of sunshine made them a preferred destination for tourist from all the corners of the world. You can choose either one of the large islands (Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, Tenerife, and El Hierro) or one of the small islands (Lobos, Alegranza, Roque del Oeste). Either way, the beaches that patiently wait for tourists to get a nice tan have all fine sands; what is very interesting about the islands is that each and every single one of them has a very strong individual personality, as the landscape is radically different to all the other ones. It is in fact one of the main attraction factors and one of the main advantages of the islands.

The climate as an attraction

Visitors say that the Islands enjoy an eternal spring. They are located very close to the hot African coast and just 4 degrees from the Cancer tropic, so their climate is mostly subtropical. However, if you decide to visit Tenerife, Gran Canaria or La Palma, be prepared for tropical rainfalls! If you choose instead Lanzarote or Fuerteventura, there are no risks, as their climate is very dry.

Enjoying the cuisine

In the Canaries, you have the chance to taste the unusual combinations of Spanish cuisine, Latin-American and African influences. One of the most famous recipes is the Papas Arrugadas; these are potatoes that inhabitants boil in salted water. They are served with the hot Mojo picon, a sauce containing parika, chili peppers, garlic and oil. I assure you that the islands are the perfect place for an unforgettable holiday, so take them into consideration for the future! They really deserve your attention!

Girona is a city that will attract you with its past, especially if you are a history lover, as its heritage is a very rich one. The historic center of the city is extremely well preserved and its old walls, built by the Romans (who also founded the city) are well conserved, so worth visiting. If you love sightseeing, don’t miss the Santa Maria Cathedral; its construction started in the 11th century and ended only in the 18th century, which led to the interesting combination of architectural elements: Romanesque, Baroque, Renaissance and Gothic, these are the periods displayed by the walls of the Cathedral.

The Justice Palace, also known as Casa Pastors and the Pia Almoina, a building built in the 14th century in a Gothic style are two other monuments that you are not allowed to miss. The former Jewish Quarter, with its narrow, medieval alleys patiently waits to be discovered and explored, so allocate a couple of hours from your free time to it! The Moorish Bathes represent another important attraction for tourists; built in 1194, the bathes were used by the inhabitants of Girona until the 15th century. If you visit Girona with your lover, one of the four bridges that link the two parts of the city represent perfect locations for romantic walks, so offer them some of your attention! Enjoy Girona!

Spain - The Hidden Wonders Of Alcoy

The city of bridges, hidden between mountains and lying at the junction of four rivers, Alcoy is a historically rich, culturally eclectic city full of interesting sights. About 45 km north of Alicante, it is easy to reach from the larger city and worth the trip.

The City

Founded and built around the cotton and paper industry, Alcoy has grown into its own over the past two centuries. It began its modernization during the last part of the Spanish industrial revolution and hasn’t stopped. With a population of around 60,000, it is a growing center of culture in Spain. The first Spanish industrial school was founded here and its central streets are adorned with classical architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Inside Alcoy, the bridges that cross the four rivers are renowned for their structural beauty. The Archeological Museum features much of the town’s history and focuses on its Greco-Roman roots. There are even several archeological sites within the city such as La Serreta and El Puig that date from the 5th century B.C. The historical significance of the sites can be seen in the remnants of the many towns and villages from throughout the ages. From a 12th century castle and the Na Valora tower of the 13th century to the hermitage of San Antonio Abad of the 18th century, a tourist can retrace the footsteps of ancient peoples and get a glimpse back in time.

The Festival

The fiesta of the Moros y Cristianos is celebrated vigorously in Alcoy from the 21st to the 24th of April every year. This is the most important cultural event in the city and everyone gets involved and helps to organize.

The first day of the festival is dedicated to musicians. Bands and street performers play traditional music all day and then gather in the city square to play a celebratory hymn in the evening. On the second day, visitor participation is encouraged in the colorful processions of ancient armies. In the morning, the Christians will enter the city followed by the Moors in the evening. On the third day, the celebrations continue with tributes to San Jorge or Saint George. The final day sees the recreation of the famous battle el Alardo. The two armies march down the streets, weapons in hand and making a lot of noise. After a great showing of military might, the ambassadors sign the peace treaty in the town square.

With so many fun things to do and see, Alcoy is a must-see on any vacation to the Alicante region of Spain and location villa costa brava. Take the entire family as there are plenty of interesting activities for everyone.

villa espagne

, Alicante and Benidorm and quaint sea-villages such as Javea and Denia, there is a town, an atmosphere, which will suit anyone.

The Big Cities

The capital of the province, Alicante, is the cultural and economic center of the region. With tourist packed beaches and a pulsating night-life, it is a modern city in the middle of a growth spurt. The Small Villages

The countryside of the Costa Blanca region can be stunningly breath-taking. Driving along the coastal highway, tourists are blessed with views of ocean cliffs drenched with rainbow strewn spray. Almond orchards and orange groves dot the hillside between villages surrounded by picturesque, terraced buildings. Javea and Denia are small fishing towns painted vibrant pastels that almost jut from the cliffside. Colorful Moraira and Villajoyosa seem to harken to a medieval period of knights and sleepy hamlets.

Other Attractions

Continuing to follow the coastal highway will lead a tourist to many theme parks. With waterslides and roller-coasters, Costa Blanca’s theme park industry has some of the best rides in the world. The beaches throughout the region offer a mix of secluded, white-sand gems all the way to tourist packed, bar and restaurant lined extravaganzas.

With a well-developed infrastructure and industry, the Costa Blanca region offers countless attractions. For the young, partying tourist, Benidorm and Alicante’s bars and clubs would be an attractive destination. A family might enjoy the quiet solitude of Denia or Javea. Regardless of the taste of the person, there is something to whet everyone’s appetite in Costa Blanca.

Beautiful Estepona

If you are looking for a destination that has tradition, beauty, adventure and history, then location villas and Estepona is the place for you!

Found on the Costa de Sol, on the West Coast of Spain, with 21 Km of coast line to explore, it is easy to understand why Walt Disney first thought of this area for Euro Disney – later moved to France.

With its 325-day a year sunshine, due to its micro climate caused by the Sierra Bermeja Mountains, this really is a year round destination.

There is not a lot of information about the history of this area, but the ever present charm of the area, the working Harbour (where there are daily auctions for fresh sea food right off the boat!) and the casual residents, lends one to believe that this charming city has been around for a very long time. Influence and descendents from the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs are found in Estepona. Few ruins are still visible, but there are archaeological deposits from the Roman Epoch. Prominent monuments, such as the Church of the Virgin of Remedies and the Tower of the Clock are great places to see, and while you are out site seeing, why not stop in at the grand properties on display, such as that of the Marquess of Mondéjar.

If History and site seeing are not on your priority list, be sure to pack your bikini, hiking boots and camera! With a multitude of water sports, Tapas bars, day trips to a Safari Park, mountains to climb, golf courses abound  and things to eat and drink are everywhere, you will certainly find an activity for every member of the family! There is also Spains first official naturalist site – the nudist beach Costa Natura. Here no bikinis are required

Plan your trip around these dates to enjoy the festivals with the locals:

15 May – San Isidro Labrador (Agricultural and Religious Celebration)

23 June – Quema de los bigotes de San Juan (Traditional Night Celebration)

July – Feria y fiestas Mayores (Annual Town Festival)

16 July – Virgen del Carmen (Fisherman’s Religious Celebrations).

Being able to pack all of these exciting activities in to one hassle free holiday should be easy to do. Remember to look for all inclusive deals, and be sure to chat to fellow travelers or locals for more exciting activities.

Once you have decided to move on to the rest of Spain, catch a train from Malaga to Barcelona. You will be taken into the Spanish interior, before reaching the Mediterranean Sea.

While in Barcelona, be sure to check out Gaudi’s Art at the Parc Guell.

Accommodation in Barcelona is easy to find, the public transport is efficient and can get you pretty much anywhere you would like to be.

Spain – a brief historical overview

History

Spain has a varied and deeply unique past. It’s a gem for tourists interested in adding a little bit of history to their locations costa brava holiday, thanks to the preservation of many historical sights and the many towns and cities that were designed and developed by previous ruling leaders which have preserved their original layouts.

The Phoenicians, Romans and Goths all laid their claim to this land during its early populated history. The Romans left their mark in the various unearthed ancient towns and villages, where you can still view amphitheatres and old streets in some areas. Many cities and towns fell into decline after the fall of the Roman Empire until the Moors entered from the south and took over most of the country.  The Moorish influence is still visible to this day in Spain and areas such as Andalucia retain a distinctly Islamic feel thanks to the 800 years of Moorish rule.

It was only when the Christian rulers and kingdoms in the far north of the country regrouped and fought back the Arab settlers that Spain was finally regained as a Christian kingdom after 8 centuries of Arab rule. The reconquista was a huge victory for the Spanish Christians and its events are still celebrated in towns and villages around the country in vibrant festivals and parties. However, it is to the Moors that the Spanish owe their picturesque narrow cobbled streets that burst onto beautiful plaza squares, and their palm trees and fountains.

Modern History

As Spain headed to modern times the southern cities of Seville and Cadiz played important strategic roles in the discovery of the new world, launching ships and men to Latin America and receiving back many influences including music, food and dance. To this day Spain retains precious links with southern America and has welcomed a mix of Latin American populations to her shores.

Modern times

The history of Spain is therefore not straightforward, and the lingering affect of years of Arab rule lives on in the cities and towns. Heading to Granada one certainly feels the Arab influence in the beauty of the Alhambra and old town. Many Spanish streets or towns have romanised their old Arab names, and many of their churches and cathedrals are built on former mosques, some with their minarets still peekinf through the top.  These southern cities are a unique blend of old and new, and you will definitely enjoy the atmosphere of any town or village in Spain, as well as the good food and wine, and of course the friendly locals.

The history of Barcelona

Like many towns and cities in Spain and elsewhere in Europe, Barcelona has a chequered past. With waves of different rulers in the past, including the Goths, location villa piscine and the Moors, the city has a wealth of historical points of interest for the interested tourist. The modern age of Barcelona can in some extent be traced back to the expulsion of the Moors from the area. As the moors withdrew the area began to come to the fore and the kingdom of Barcelona managed to control many of the islands in the Mediterranean as well as some areas of France and Greece. This was a golden era of Catalan power in the wake of Arab rule.

Unfortunately, plague, disease and sieges led to decline. Locals initiated a rebellion which resulted in the fall of the city to Felipe V from France who banned their language and maintained a military rule over the town. The area saw a period of re-growth during Spain’s adventures in the new world of the Americas. The city grew enormously and modernised thanks to its cotton industry, as well as undergoing a sort of Catalan renaissance thanks to the romantic movement of the time. This resulted in the growth of Catalan nationalism.

Turmoil erupted at the end of the 1800s with all sections of society attempting to manoeuvre into positions of power. At the same time, the city began to struggle with a growing population which went from just over one hundred thousand to 500,000 by the early 20th century. As the city grew in industrial strength it saw a further bloat in population as the city swelled to accommodate workers from the countryside and as the size of the working class population grew and became more demanding so did the number of strikes and protests.

The independence movement never went away and by the beginning of Spain’s 2nd republic there were calls for an independent state. This became a brief reality and for about 12 months the area was run by Marxists and anarchists in a show of independence. This peace didn’t last however, and infighting eventually erupted into riots.

During Franco’s rule Barcelona stood firm against the fascist dictator, until eventually falling to his henchmen just before the outbreak of WW11. Many locals rather fled to France than be ruled by a fascist, and disappeared out of the country. Franco’s oppression of the Catalan region began, but did nothing to halt the Catalan spirit which still remains fiercely independent to this day.

Parks in Madrid

Overview

Madrid boasts a number of lovely parks which are a great place to stroll in. They’re also loved by the locals who like to escape from the heat of the strong Spanish sun, and by tourists who, tired from a long days sightseeing and shopping, like to sit down and take a breather.

Botanical Gardens

The botanical gardens are a wonderful spot. If you’ve been at the Prado museum you should take a break here. There’s a wide range of flora and fauna in the park, including thousands of different types of trees and flowers from across the globe. The park is organised into different areas with long boulevards along which to walk and information on every plant and tree. If you’re looking to spend an afternoon in this park then you should take the metro to the Atocha stop.

Parque del Retiro

One of Madrid’s biggest parks is the Parque del Retiro. A huge park which is full of trees and greenery and bordered by beautiful entrance gates through which you can gain access. There are elaborate sculptures and statues of Spanish royalty dotted throughout the park, and you can even rent a small boat to take out on the huge man made lake. It’s definitely a great way to relax after a long hot day. The Park del Retiro also contains a wonderfully fragrant rose garden and features romantic walkways for a secluded stroll. If you’re interested in art you may be lucky enough to catch one of the roving art displays that sometimes make an appearance in the location maison en espagne. If you want to take the metro to this park you should get off at Retiro stop.

Casa de Campo

There’s also Casa de Campo which you’ll find by following the river to the west of the city. Another large park, but not as large as the first 2, Casa de Campo provides a number of recreation facilities for those who wish to be a little more active. Here, you can hire a rowing boat and play some sports on the sports courts. This park is a great one to take the kids to, as it features a zoo as well as an amusement arcade which the kids are sure to enjoy. Take the metro to Lago and get off there.

Other smaller parks include Parque Finte del Berro and the Parque del Oeste in the west of the city. Quieter than the main ones, these parks are the perfect place for a quiet slow and secluded reflection.

Historical buildings of Madrid

Older buildings

There are quite a few historic buildings in modern Madrid that you should definitely try and see. Already well established by medieval times, the city boasts some fine construction dating back to the middle ages. Head to the Plaza de la Villa and check out the former prison of French King Francis housed in the Lujanes tower. Nearby, there’s a fantastic display of old newspapers, dating back to the 1900s and open daily for those interested in local history, housed in the Hemeroteca Municipal. Heading away from the square you’ll have to navigate narrow alleys but soon reach the church of San Nicolas de los Servitas. This red brick church is Madrid’s oldest, despite its well kept façade. Boasting a tower reminiscent of Spain’s Arab past, it’s located near to San Pedro el Real. A real point of interest is the old Moreria which still retains its Arab features.

Following the reconquista maison espagne was back in the hands of the Christians. During the Habsburg Empire the city buildings flourished. Near the main square you’ll find wonderful archways which lead into the Plaza Mayor, which during the era as now was a bustling meeting place and point of trade. In the past the area was the centre for entertainment and coronation, watched from the many balconies facing the square.

In the Plaza de la Villa you’ll find the town hall and a little further on you’ll reach the Palacio de los Vargas which is an interesting structure from the 16th century which holds a number of even more interesting local artefacts. Also interesting to view is the church of the Basilica of Atocha which was completely destroyed during Franco’s time and eventually rebuilt and renovated in the 1950s. The city boasts many other pleasant squares and plazas, too many to mention here, including the famous Puerta del Sol and the Plaza de las Descalzas amongst others, each with their own interesting buildings and histories and a very pleasant area in which to stroll.

Modern Madrid

In modern times Madrid has built and expanded on its historical roots. As the city began to grow and the population began to rise, town planners were faced with the problem of expansion. However, there have been a number of buildings built which are of note – these include the Telephone exchange, the Fine arts club and of course the Arc de triomphe which you can find in another of Madrid’s many squares – the Plaza de la Moncloa. Finally, head to the Plaza Picasso and view some of the newest buildings in Madrid.

La Seu – Valencia’s Cathedral

Overview

The beautiful cathedral in Valencia – known as La Seu – is located in the beautiful old part of the City. Boasting beautiful medieval architecture and housing some valuable old paintings as well as a holy chalice, reputed to be the one used by Jesus Christ at the last supper and used by many Popes throughout the ages. Popes John Paul and Benedict have both visited the cathedral. Built on the site of an original church followed by a Moorish mosque, the Cathedral was built in mainly gothic style over centuries although construction began in the 13th Century and there is evidence of baroque and Romanesque styles as well. Despite damage by fire during the Spanish Civil War the cathedral remains a beautiful sight. Visiting the cathedral is free however you will have to give a small donation in order to receive the very interesting guided tour available.

What to see in the cathedral

There is a bell tower adjacent to the Cathedral which, if you’re feeling up to it, offers a beautiful panorama of the city and view of some of Valencia’s best landmarks. You’ll just have to manage the heavy climb up the many steps as there is unfortunately no lift!

Head round to the door of the Apostles (Puerto de los Apostoles) every Thursday before lunch and you could be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of some of the rural farmers discussing their water and irrigation difficulties! This has been going on for generations and generations and the process remains unchanged throughout.

The church is open for prayer daily and tours and audio guides are available in many languages. If you are able to attend a service, you should do, as the choir is particularly talented and the building makes the sound of their voices ever more beautiful. There has been some remarkably detailed work done on the cathedral frescoes thanks to some talented artists and the paintings and frescos have now been restored to their full glory. Whether you are interested in the artwork, architecture, the holy chalice or the history of the building, the Cathedral will be sure to interest you. Or, you may want to pop in and spend some quiet time in between the shopping and sightseeing in the cool interior of the Cathedral walls. Either way, the Cathedral of Valencia will be sure to welcome you as it has done others for centuries.

Las Fallas

Background to Las Fallas Festival in Valencia

The fantastic festival of Las Fallas is well known throughout Spain and worldwide. Thousands flock to the city during March every year to enjoy the festivities and holiday atmosphere during this special time. Numerous smaller towns and villages in the region also have similar smaller Fallas festivals which operate on a smaller scale but are no less enjoyable. Lasting 4 days, the whole region and city of Valencia adopt a carnival atmosphere and holiday feeling with the whole community getting involved in the preparations and celebrations.

The city hosts music festivals, concerts and shows, often featuring local celebrities. During the year organisers raise funds and collect money for the festivals, and preparations include the making of the large Fallas – the elaborate and stunningly colourful papier mache and wooden statues that give the festival its name – which then adorn the city streets during the celebrations. The statues will be paraded through the town in the build up to the celebrations and mounted on boards full of fireworks.

Celebrating San Jose, the Patron Saint of wood workers, legend has it that the festival of Las Fallas began when local workmen in the city would set fire to any leftover materials at the years end. The celebrations are marked with fireworks and music throughout, beginning with the grand opening ceremony and culminating in the burning of the Fallas statues. Some very lucky Fallas will eventually be rescued and preserved in the local museum. Their firework filled stands will launch colourful displays into the air. A good place to join in is at the Turia Gardens for fireworks each evening which is a spectacular display.

What to see during the festival

Locals also take great trouble in preparing their festival outfits and costumes. Local girls and women put on beautiful traditional dresses for key events and ceremonies during the festivals including the carrying of flowers to and the adornment of the Basilica of the Virgin of the Forsaken. During the festivities local delicacies are consumed in abundance. These include of course the delicious Paella (Valencia is the region from which paella originates) and the sweet and sticky sugar covered churros whose smell we are familiar with in fairgrounds throughout Europe. Celebrations normally last late into the evening and the Spanish are famous for partying long into the night. The city is very busy at this time, and it is therefore recommended to book restaurants and accommodation before you travel.

Nightlife in Valencia

Overview

The Spanish are famous for sleeping in the afternoon, eating late and partying until early in the morning, and the Valencians are no exception! The city offers a wide choice of night life for everyone, from low key chilled out venue to loud and late parties in the old town or on the beach. There’s definitely something for everyone in this trendy, cosmopolitan and fashionable city on the east coast of Spain, just be prepared to stay out late if you want to see the best of it!

Where to go, what to do

Heading to Valencia for a weekend break means you will be able to experience the best the city has to offer in terms of night life. Although many venues are open mid-week, the weekend is when the party really begins for many of the locals. There are great clubs, classy cocktail bars and chilled out jazz lounges from which to choose, so you will never be disappointed whatever your taste! The best thing is that the clubs and bars open late and stay open until the early hours of the morning meaning you’ll have plenty of time to sample local delicacies in the restaurants and cafes without being in a rush.

Those interested in festivals and music will love Valencia too – during the good weather the city hosts an outdoor cinema in the Turia Gardens which is a brilliant experience. Others may prefer to head to the old cobbled streets of Barrio del Carmen for a more bohemian feel with bars and clubs in abundance and a laid back relaxed atmosphere. For fashionable cocktail bars and top end restaurants many like to head to upscale Canovas Square. And those who want to get off the tourist trail and live it up with the locals should head to Juan Llorens – here you’ll find bars and clubs open all hours for some serious partying.

Many will also like the cool and relaxed beach bars down by the beach front. In the summer this is a perfect place to relax with a cocktail as the sun sets before the bar owners turn on the music and you can party all night with the waves lapping against the shore. Head to Las Arenas or Malvarossa for the best spots, including beach bar Vivir Sin Dormir which is open all day and serves cool cocktails at night.

Whatever your tastes, the city of Valencia has something for everyone.

Oceanografic – Europe’s largest aquarium

Overview

The interesting and uniquely shaped aquarium in Valencia is officially called L’Oceanografic and is a very popular open air marine park. Located in the huge City of Arts and Sciences complex the aquarium is officially the largest of its kind in the EU, and also one of the largest worldwide. The park attracts a large amount of visitors daily. Its unique design has led it to be compared to Barcelona’s landmark signature buildings designed by Gaudi, and Oceanografic’s designer Felix Candela has created a similar masterpiece. The City of Arts and Sciences complex is very easily accessible to those coming from Valencia by public transport or on foot via the Turia gardens. The Aquarium has a good range of facilities in order to welcome its many visitors including ocean themed restaurants and bars which have viewing tanks integrated into the walls.

What to see at the Oceanografic

The aquarium is itself divided up into different areas each with special features to delight adults and children alike. Officially called ‘Mediterranean’ the aquariums themselves house sea life typical to the Mediterranean region including some beautiful fish and scorpions. The Ocean section is a thrill for the kids as they can see the penguins act as if they were in the wild and watch them flop into the water or lounge on the rocks. The Arca del Mar section is an area dedicated to maintaining many different ocean creatures that are unfortunately in danger of becoming extinct and the Oceanographico area shows good examples of wetlands and natural swamps.

From Oceanographico, head to the Artic section which has been constructed in the style of an igloo. Here scientists analyse sea creatures including walruses. A large section dedicated to dolphins, called the Dolphinarium, is also a treat. Here you can see the dolphins perform tricks in the large arena. Other sections of the aquarium cover the other oceans and seas of the world, and their fish that live in their deep waters. The aquarium is a definite must do for families visiting Valencia, and there is enough to see and do to fill a whole day! If you have time you can also head over to the other facilities and attractions in the City of Parks and Sciences and take a tour of the other sites in the complex or simply marvel at the wonderful architecture in this modern complex.

The area of Barrio del Carmen in Valencia

Overview

The area of Barrio del Carmen in Valencia is a wonderfully tranquil area of the city which also boasts an interesting night life. Much loved and popular amongst the younger crowd, the area is trendy and relaxed and is located near the old town. The area has many bars and restaurants and a rather bohemian feel to it, reminiscent of other similar areas in many other European cities, with street artists and outdoor cafes.

Atmosphere

Closed to car access, the area has beautiful cobbled streets and was once in danger of falling into disrepair. Some of the older buildings of note have been lovingly restored and converted into bars and cafes. Now it’s a hip, vibrant area where young people from the city and tourist alike flock to dance the night away. The area will be buzzing every night, but head down at the weekends to experience the local party atmosphere. The outdoor terraces along the Calle de Caballeros are wonderful places in which to enjoy a quiet drink in the early evening before heading out on the town.

What to do

During the day there are numerous points of interest that will appeal to those interested in local history and art, and the Valencian Institute Of Modern Art is to be found in this area. Affectionately named El Carme by locals, the area is easily accessible to all and its pedestrianised streets make it a pleasure to still along. Here you can see the Serrano’s Tower which is one of the remaining defence walls from the old city wall. Torres de Cuart, another defence wall, is equally as impressive and the location of these walls will dictate whether you are in the old part of town or the new.

The combination of local history, good food and vibrant nightlife make this little part of town a real delight. If you can keep up with the Spanish and party into the small hours, then you should head to one of the many clubs in the area. Spanish clubs open late, around midnight, and provide a real party atmosphere. If that’s not your scene then there are more relaxed venues including bars with live music or jazz, or outdoor cafes for those just wishing to take in the scenery, do some people watching and drink a coffee after a brilliant Spanish meal or some traditional valencian paella.
